A Short-Term Solution: A Brand New Bed

This year, I finally did something for not only myself but my partner that would completely change our lives. And by lives, I mean entirely our sleep. I splurged and got us a new king-sized bed, a very supportive foam topper, and a new bed frame his long legs could actually not hang off. For reference, he’s over 6 feet tall. Having a small dog and a giant boyfriend to share the bed with, most of our nights were spent apart because we simply just didn’t fit, or 1 of us would kick the other awake. Will a new bed improve insomnia for me?

Old beds and sleep struggles

Now in the past, I have gotten a new queen bed (the first in my adult life) somewhere around the age of 21. Up until then, I slept on my child-sized twin bed. Perhaps this is just 1 reason I’ve always struggled with sleep; the feeling of constantly feeling claustrophobic in your own bed and unable to relax or stretch out the way you want to.

I knew it was time for a new bed for both of us when I would constantly wake up because my partner just literally could not fit inside the bed with a queen bed frame. The footrest was raised so his legs would fold over constantly. Since we’ve lived together, it was always an issue, even when I had a bed frame that let his feet hang off the bed.

New bed = better sleep patterns

It seems like such a small, but wild thing we both went through. So, I decided to look at our sleep patterns. I discovered that we both had fewer sleep interruptions and overall, much better sleep hygiene. With my watch, I was able to see patterns. I noticed a significant and overall deep, meaningful, and physically restful sleep that gave us energy for the next day.

The change was almost overnight. Although, I have to be honest: the first few nights actually hurt my back because I had never slept on anything so supportive and solid.

New bed improves insomnia: a life-changer!

I’ve been falling asleep faster and waking up less often. Due to the width of the foam topper I purchased, it also helps both of our bodies truly rest and heal at night. Before that, we’d both wake up every morning feeling sore and unrested. However, he didn’t acknowledge it because he still struggles a lot with snoring. (I’m still pushing him to go get a study done).

I have multiple physical disabilities and this bed has truly been a life-changer for me. Especially during surgeries I’ve had in the last few months, the new bed has helped my recovery. I know we’re both more aware in the morning, less likely to press the snooze button, and feel more ready to take on the day.

More quality sleep

I’m really thankful I did something nice for myself, though it took a while to save up for each piece. It’s a place where we all fit now. I’m having fewer episodes of insomnia, also with the help of medications still. But it’s a place where we know we will be getting so much more quality sleep during the night with fewer interruptions. I am able to fall back asleep quicker, which has always been a huge issue with my insomnia.

Right now, this feels like a huge win and I'm taking it all in. Mind you, I still have significant sleep issues, but overall, things are becoming better sleep-wise, which affects me both physically and emotionally.

Have you ever encountered a (semi) solution such as a simple change of beds/bedframes/supportive foam toppers? Please share a comment.
