A heart sleeping peacefully in bed.

Insomnia and Our Heart Health

I have always said that lack of sleep is 1 of the most underrated things in the world and people do not understand how widely and severely it can affect your life. Our hearts are central and naturally 100% vital to our existence and healthy functioning. Therefore, our heart is the organ that we need to really look after. Following heart health tips for insomnia may help.

What happens when we sleep?

When we sleep our body rests, and our organs rest and restore energy so that they can function properly when we wake up again. This includes your heart. It is resting and beating slower, getting the blood to where it must be to make sure that everything gets what it must get.

If we are not getting enough consecutive sleep, it could mean that our body is not recharging enough to then carry on going for the next bout of wakefulness. Which is also very possibly an extended period of wakefulness. If you do not sleep properly, your heart may not get a chance to rest and in turn, your blood pressure does not get a chance to drop either.

Heart health tips for insomnia

Try low impact exercise

Being tired all the time means that you will rarely have the energy and motivation to work out – which is 100% relatable. It takes a large amount of energy to take your body up and out of the house to even just go for a walk.

Working out, even in a very gentle way, is vital to keep your heart healthy. Trying to find something really low impact, like a slow walk just to get something in, can help you stay on top of your health.

Select healthy foods

Choosing unhealthy food happens so quickly, sooner than we can count from 1 to 10. Being tired means that our bodies crave foods with high sugar. Junk food gives us that instant boost.

Healthy eating with insomnia also means that we will hardly have the energy to get up and cook a nutritious meal with all the colors and vegetables that we actually need. So, we would more likely reach for something easier, or takeaways. The easy reason is that it means no cooking and no dishes that need to be washed either.

While having an occasional junk food meal is alright, we know it is very important to eat well and select healthy food. But if you are tired all the time, maybe you just can not get it together to cook the meals and go shopping for healthy food. You are going to find that you are reaching for junk foods more often, and this is where it becomes a problem. The sodium, sugar fats, and additives are very unhealthy for your heart.

Get regular check-ups

Take care of your heart health, go for a check-up when you can, and eat as healthy as you can. Do the best you can with what you have. Always take note of your concerns and raise them with your healthcare provider. If you have any concerns about your heart, be sure to reach out to your doctor as soon as you can.
