Paranormal Experience Began a Lifetime of Insomnia

Hey! I'm Jes, and I currently reside in northern Ontario, Canada. I'm intuitive, a mother of 2, a wife, artistic, and an advocate.

I've suffered from insomnia most of my life. I wish this could be one of those things you get a medal for but unfortunately, I only ever got bags under my eyes and a snappy attitude as a constellation prize.

I have no idea exactly when it started, but I can remember as young as 2-years old struggling with night terrors after my parents' messy divorce. Several moves and my parents' estrangement made bedtime frightening.

How insomnia has affected my life

Insomnia has largely impacted my life from a young age. And as I test out the waters of the 30-something club, I have really been able to investigate my sleep patterns with a wider scope. This includes my physical health, spiritual well-being, and disease and how each not only affects me but how I can improve on those areas as well. I have become skilled at working through the sleepless nights, the early mornings, and all the emotions in between.

Many different circumstances have sparked my insomnia throughout the years. It has also taken different forms – anything from night terrors to sleep paralysis, medication side effects, and crippling anxiety to painsomnia.

Insomnia, night terrors, and spirituality

My very first experience with night terrors was at the age of 2, and I personally believe it was of the paranormal kind. If any of you experience night terrors or have witnessed your children having them, they can be quite disturbing and can make bedtime feel dreadful – and with good reason.

I have reflected a lot on the moments waking up from those awful terrors and recalling frightening shadows on my walls that could not be duplicated. My personal beliefs are that my insomnia is connected to my spirituality, and my lack of sleep or inability to sleep has mainly presented itself after the deaths of loved ones or times of major life transformations. I know this will not resonate for everyone, but for those who do, I see you!

Making sleep a priority for my whole family

As a mother myself, now sleep is a priority in our family, not only for my children but for myself. I'm very passionate about encouraging healthy, safe, and comfortable sleep habits early on, as I think my undetected insomnia by my caregivers and health team did a lot of damage and has created a lifetime of unhealthy sleep hygiene habits to unlearn.

Becoming aware of mind and body reactions

I really encourage anyone who struggles with insomnia of any kind to reflect and see if you can remember the first time your sleep was chronically interrupted or if there are specific patterns as to what's happening in your waking life when you experience insomnia.

Being aware of why and how our bodies and minds react the way they do is not only fascinating, but it can also lead to a lot of healing – and hopefully lead to a good night's sleep!
