Has anyone experienced a 10% weight loss and reduced sodium levels with their insomnia

For the last three months I would say I have had cronic insomnia. I go to sleep and get 2 to 3 hours of sleep. Then I am up for the rest of night. Over these three months I have lost 10% of body weight and when a recent blood test was done my sodium level was really low around 122 when normal is 135 to 145 mEq/L.

I have had various medical test such as a CT scan and nothing is showing up. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar outcomes from thier insomnia?

  1. Thank you Melissa. The potassium was a little high but other than that the bloodwork was normal. We continue to work with the doctors to pinpoint the cause but to date nothing is showing up.

I am taking a online course called undoing insomnia by Nick Wignall. It is based on CBT-I. My biggest challenge is my midnight plan. The plan is a method to relax after you wake up and then hopefully go back to sleep. I have a plan but it does not seem to be working. Maybe I just need to stick to it and hopefully it will help someday. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    1. Hi . I sometimes bump it up to 500 as well. I had the same issues with 100. Way too fast and easy. I hope it helps! - Lori (Team Member)

    2. For me, I need to be warm -- I am sleeping with my light sheets now that it's getting warmer, but I still keep an extra blanket nearby. I think it's the weight! I would probably do well with a weighted blanket.

My best strategy when I am really struggling to sleep is a guided meditation or "sleep story." I use the Calm app, but there is a free trial and other free alternatives on YouTube, etc. The guided meditations help to slow my body down for rest, where the sleep stories are more imaginative and give me something else to focus on beyond the tension of "oh no, I can't sleep!"

CBT-I is the gold standard, so I'm really glad you're exploring that. Would love to hear more about your experience -- positive or negative -- when you've had more time to see how it works for you. If you're feeling up for it, I'd encourage you to post a separate topic here in the forums so that more people can see it.

Keep us posted. Thinking of you! -Melissa, team member

  2. Hi. Sorry you're going through this, it sounds uncomfortable and concerning. I did some searching, and it seems like low sodium is associated with fatigue and sleepiness, not insomnia. Was the rest of your bloodwork normal? We're not medical experts and we can't give medical advice, so I would encourage you to keep working with your doctors to see if they can pinpoint a cause.

Have you tried anything to manage your insomnia? Maybe we can offer you some strategies. Please keep us posted -- wishing all the best to you! -Melissa, team member
