I have about run out of aces.

I have been battling chronic insomnia since 1997. Meds that I have tried include Trazadone, Ambien, Zyprexa plus Effexor or Lexapro, Seroquel, Mirtazapine, Zoloft, Xanax, Klonopin, plus a few others whose name I can not recall. Out of all of them, Xanax worked pretty well, but I did not see that as a viable long-term solution. And then, back in 2019, I tried Amitriptyline. And it has worked very well until here recently when 200 mg was no longer sufficient. But I got four good years of sleep from it, so I'm grateful for that. My physician recently increased the dosage to 250 mg, and said the maximum dose is 300 mg. Was hoping someone could offer some suggestions on what other options I might pursue when 300 mg is no longer sufficient. Thanks in advance.

  1. Hi . I am glad you at least got a few good years from the lower dose of Amitriptyline. Has your doctor ever explored the source of your insomnia or do you have any idea what triggers it? Here is a general article about insomnia treatments that might help you think about treatments you haven't considered before: https://insomnia.sleep-disorders.net/treatment. You can click on links within the article for more information or simply enter "treatment" in the search box at the top of the page (to the left) and check out some of the articles that come up.
Hopefully, other community members will chime in here with some experiences of their own to share. Insomnia treatments can vary so much from person to person that it is hard to make any kind of comparisions beyond the side effects. I hope the increase in dosage helps for at least another four years. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
