No Natural feelings of tiredness

Hello All

I’m hoping someone out there has had the same experience as me as I am completely at a loss with it all.
It all started about 5 months ago.
I would go to sleep fine & wake up in the night in a sweat. Fall back asleep but feel like I hadn’t slept.
Gradually over the weeks this got worse to the point where I couldn’t get to sleep at all.
I’ve been to the docs prescribed amitriptyline - worked intermittently then not at all.
Phenergan - didn’t work, just made me sweat.
Zopiclone - worked for one night then became very ineffective.
Mirtazapine - worked for 1 week - currently on 2nd week & have become ineffective.

The one thing that worries me about my insomnia is I have no natural feelings of tiredness anymore. It’s just pure exhaustion. I went 48 hours unable to fall asleep & finally succumbed to it & fell asleep for half an hour.
This all happened at a time where I had started exercising & improving my fitness, therefore my mental health & sleep should have been better than ever. I did everything within my power to improve my sleep before turning to medication, this was the one road I didn’t want to go down. I don’t get any DOMS when exercising anymore.
Medication appears to become very ineffective very quickly.
It’s seriously affected my quality of life to the point my immune system was so down I couldn’t recover from a cough & cold for about 3/4 weeks. Any sleep I get isn’t natural or refreshing so my body just constantly aches. I got to the point I couldn’t function mentally & I am now off work trying to find a solution.

Any help would be much appreciated, this is like torture.

  1. thank you for the suggestion regarding an endocrinologist, it’s not something I am familiar with. I will look into this & mention to my doctor on Monday.

    1. Hi both thank you for your reply.
Insomnia is being treated as the main issue right now. I’ve had blood tests and all came back fine, I’ve had a CT scan that also came back fine. I was referred for further tests but because that was more of a cancer based referral they didn’t do anything - really frustrating. I’m due to see my doctor again on Monday.
To me this feels like a neurological issue, like someone has flicked a switch in my brain and turned off some vital functions. That’s the only way I can describe this. It’s hard enough trying to get things through to doctors, nevermind when you’re exhausted.

I’ve managed to get some “sleep” last night so I feel a bit better mentally today. However physically I just feel awful all the time. My body aches constantly & it now means that exercise is becoming hard & counter productive for me.

It’s a worrying time as it only seems to be getting worse. I don’t know how things are going to be from one day to the next.

      1. I’ve recently changed my doctor & asked for a plan to be put in place to try & get some answers. She referred me straight away & said she was going to do some research of her own & arranged a follow up appointment. It left me with some confidence that she wants to help get to the bottom of it.
It’s horrible when you are suffering & feel like nothing is helping or no one has the answers. I just keep trying to reiterate that I don’t get natural tiredness or refreshing repairing sleep. But at this point I will try anything to try and get answers I need.
I’ve not found anything about this online so far. I’ve had nights previously where I’ve not slept but I have never experienced anything quite like this. We all know our own bodies better than anyone else. It’s hard not to think about the worst case scenario.
I’m glad you got to the bottom of that, sometimes it does just take that one symptom with the right person. I will keep trying to make as much noise as possible & say this isn’t working.

      2. How wonderful, . It must feel good to finally know that someone is listening and working toward a diagnosis. Keep us updated, if you don't mind. I will most definitely be thinkin of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    2. - I can imagine how baffling this is for you and how frustrating it must be. The fact that you are also not experiencing things like DOMS. I agree with Lori, I think that there may be something else going on, have you considered doing a full workup and health check to see if there is something else going on?

I find that Insomnia can be a slippery slope, the less sleep I get, the harder it is to get it under control. My whole body gets out of whack.

      How are you feeling today?

      1. I can feel your frustration, . Is your doctor treating your insomnia as the main health issue or as a symptom? I am no medical expert, but it sounds like insomnia might be a symptom of something else, maybe a thyroid disorder or something else hormone-related. Nightsweats can also be a symptom of a thyroid disorder. When symptoms are vague like this, you really have to advocate strongly for yourself and insist on testing and referals to specialists. Basic thyroid tests do not always go deep enough. A referral to an endocrinologist for a thorough evelauation might be more helpful. I hope others chime in with some other perspectives and experiences. Please keep us posted if you don't mind. I will be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
