Lori.Foster Apart from all medication groups in the article you shared one that is very often overlooked is neuroleptics (anti-psychotics) in very low dose. Psychiatrists often prescribe drugs like Quetiapine 25 mg (atypical) or Chlorprothixene 15 mg (typical). I had been suffering from the sleep maintenance kind of insomnia for years and would use Xanax 0.5 mg as an occasional remedy since it's addictive potential doesn't allow to use it as a long term medication and it used to be the drug that gave me the best sleep, but after I was prescribed Chlorprothixene I definitely changed my mind. You can use it regularly for months if necessary without physical addiction (hello benzo) while getting sleep just as deep and quality as benzo or even better. From the mechanism of action point of view it seems to suppress brain activity, not just forcefully putting you to sleep like Z-drugs, which I believe are totally ineffective. Anti-psychotics give drowsiness, slowed thinking, drastic anxiety reduction and by doing all that it naturally causes sleep onset and maintenance.
Hopefully this can help someone.
