What if your sleep is broken up???

My sleep is pretty crappy. I was taking 7.5 Mirtazipine for about 2 years and it worked and then started wearing off. I stopped taking it for a month and only took melatonin. My sleep was about 3 on and 3 off. THen I got back to the Mirtazipine and I slept great for one night. Then the next night it was pretty weak, may 5 hours. Then the next night 2-3 hours. So I figured I'd stop taking Mirtaz so my body could build up sensitivity to it again. So only with the melatonin I was getting 3 hours. AFter a couple days I took the mirtazipine again and again I only got 3 hours..with both the melatonin and mirtazipine. I finally went to the doctor who gave me hydroxyzine but it didn't work. THey put me on the lowest dose possible. A new doctor then gave me Mirtazipine again and told me to take 7.5 for 7 days and then switch to 15 mg after that and come back in two weeks. Well, now I'm on 15mg and my sleep seems to be 1 hour of sleep, then wake up, pee, fall back to sleep for 2 hours, wake up for abt 10 minutes, then sleep again for 2 - 3 hours, and then that's the night. What do you think is going on? I should mention that yes, I have VERY SEVERE PTSD from past abuse and bullying.

  1. Im not seeing anyone. I have an appt in a few days with a primary provider. Also, ive started wearing a smart watch and it seems most nights im sleeping abt 4hrs and 30 min with no medicine. Perhaps the medicine wasn't doing anything at all..

    1. How interesting. I hope you land on treatment that helps extend that to at least six hours. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. I have my first appointment with a new doctor from the VA in a few days. Hopefully they'll start assigning me to a mental health specialists.

    1. Hello Melissa. I actually feel that my sleeping issues have been resolved. I'm on Mirtazipine, (7.5mg) Magnesium prescription, 10 mg of Melatonin and I drink a glass of chocolate milk (don't laugh lol) and I'm getting about 8 hrs a night. It still takes me a minute to fall asleep, and I admit I also still wake up in the middle of the night after 5 hrs on the dot, however, now I'd say it takes me 30 min to fall asleep verses the original 3 - 4 hrs it was before. And when I wake up, I simply eat a small meal with another glass of milk to resolve the hunger I get when I wake up and I'm able to return to sleep for another 3 hrs.

    2. Wow, that's great news! I imagine that's a big relief for you, too. No judgement at all about the milk. I am 36 years old and drink milk every single day. I hate water and the protein helps me feel satisfied. Of course, chocolate is never wrong! Wishing you continued success. 3. Hi . How frustrating. It sounds like it might be time to try something new. Are you seeing a primary care doctor, a psychiatrist or a neurologist? A psychiatrist or neurologist might be able to help you find a medication that addresses your PTSD and allows you to sleep. Please keep us posted. I'll be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
