Drousy in the afternoon, wide awake at night

I have been getting around 8 hours of sleep consistently for the past 3 years. I am almost never feel sleep deprived, but a weird experience I have almost every day is SEVERE drousiness in the afternoon.

This usually start after 4 pm. From then on till 5:30 pm I have the strongest desire to sleep, which I find odd considering I slept 8+ hours the night before. I try to avoid this nap, because if I sleep in the afternoon I CANNOT fall asleep at night and have to stay up till at least 2:30 or 3 am.

What I also find odd is that despite the severe drousiness I experience in the afternoon, I am wide awake when I come to bed at around 11 pm, usually unable to fall asleep before 1 am. Would any of you have an explanation to this? I am aware of the circadian rhythm and the basics of sleep science to some extent.

I'm a 21 year old male who goes to the gym 5-6 days a week and am quite fit. My usual sleep schedule is from 1-1:30 am till 9-10 am.

  1. Hi . It's not unusual to be sleepy in the afternoon. In fact many cultures either still incorporate afternoon naps (siestas) or used to do so until the pressures of industrialized society forced them to give it up. I wish you could take a daily nap then, but I doubt it fits in your schedule. If your sleepiness is extreme though, you might want to ask your doctor to check your levels of Vitamin D and B vitamins along with your iron levels and your thyroid hormones. Deficiencies in any of those can cause debilitating fatigue. My son was having a horrible time getting up in the mornings and staying awake during the day when he was 17, even after nine or ten hours sleep. I finally took him to the doctor's and we learned his B12 levels were extremely low. He has been vegetarian since age 4 and vegatarians are often low on B12. After a few days of taking supplements, his energy was back. It is amazing how profound the effect of a nutritional deficiency can be. I hope others join in with some insight here as well, but that is good place to start. Keep us posted if you don't mind. I will be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
