Light sleep auditory hallucinations

Hey guys,
just wanted some clarification please, if anybody has one.

It started a few weeks ago and has been both exciting and terrifying, however, I can't pinpoint the cause or how to get rid of it.

I have a light (?) genetic sleep disorder inherited from my father, nothing serious but I have general trouble falling asleep and my sleep cycles are not regular. I do not take any medication except natural things like melatonin. Recently, while falling asleep/almost dreaming (usually multiple vivid dreams per night, I keep a dream diary), my ears always start ringing, starting quietly growing super loud in matter of a few seconds. It feels like the ear rumbling you can do while flexing your inner ear muscles. After I wake up from the noise, I start hearing voices of people I know, but the thing is they are super loud and super realistic. Usually, I am not able to distinguish a dream from reality even though the dreams are super weird, but I know for sure these are not dreams since the voices are only auditory. It's like somebody would start talking to you right in your ear/inside your head. What they are saying is not scary in itself, sometimes it's not directed to me, sometimes it is.

First time it happened I was unable to think about anything else dhring the day but how real it felt.

What's troubling is how "real" they sound, and the accompanying noise in my ears. I can stop it by fully waking up and becoming conscious again, however, if I just shake it off and go back to sleep, the ringing and the voices come back. It has gotten to a point where my ears hurt, and several times I was lying paralyzed with fear in my bed thinking somebody is next to me. I don't drink much and had psychedelics only once in my life, if it matters. I tend to listen to louder-than-normal music, but nothing brutal. If you know something, please help. Thanks, sleep tight!

  1. Hi , thank you for sharing! That definitely sounds scary. Have you tried speaking with your doctor about this new symptom? We recommend speaking with a healthcare professional to see if they can help pinpoint the issue. I hope you're able to get some answers soon! Wishing you all the best, Allison (Team Member)
