What do you look for in a weighted stuffed animal?

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I am looking to try combating my insomnia with a weighted stuffed animal. I've tried a weighted blanket before and while it helps, I sometimes find it too heavy and suffocating.

For those of you that own a weighted stuffed animal, do you find that it helps? Are there features that it's lacking you wish was available? I noticed most on Amazon don't go above 5 pounds, and I'm wondering if that is too light, but heavier ones on Etsy get pretty pricy (some over $100).

  1. Hi everyone! great memory, and thanks for thinking of me and tagging me! - hello! I'm so glad you're here. Lori is right, I've tried many weighted stuffed animals over the last few years. I'll share with you that my favorite have been the ones Target sells - they are the brand pillowfort, come in 4 varieties/colors, are about 3lbs and $30. They are long - 20-24 inches, which helps me feel like I get a good snuggle in. To be honest, I sleep with two because of the way the weight is distributed, I'm a side sleeper and I like one in front of me and one behind me. These have been my favorite for about the last year and I have nothing really to put in the "cons" column about them. You can also go to a store to hug some before you buy them, which I really like, rather than buying online sight unseen. The other one I really like is the weighted heart from DEMDACO; it's available on Amazon, about $40, and about 2.25lbs. To me, if I place the weighted animal on my chest/around my heart, the 2-3lb weight seems sufficient without sufficating, and that doesn't break the bank either. I also bring this to therapy with me to help with my anxiety - its smaller and fits in my backpack. Another option is the "Warming" friends that can be microwaved for like a heating pad or soothing feeling. They are in a similar weight class and price class, but they come scented usually (a benefit to some, not my preference) and can often be found at a Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Home Goods type place. I hope you find something you like, and I'm looking forward to hearing if other community members have suggestions too! Warmly, Amanda (Insomnia.Sleep-Disorders.net Team Member)
