What's the most helpful thing you've learned about your Insomnia?

Ive been told so many unhelpful things which got me to thinking - has anyone here either been given good/helpful advice, or learned something through their experiences that has been a game changer mentally or physically and would be willing to share below? So curious or everyone's insight!

  1. PS I have tried tart cherry juice and love the stuff. It replaces the glass of nice red wine I used to have in the evenings but I know wrecks sleep. It probably helped a tiny bit but really the glycine seems to be the answer!

    1. This product works for sleep!! I have suffered with lack of sleep since menopause. I would wake up at 3:30 to use the washroom and not be able to get back to sleep. So frustrating!! So, I just got into the habit of getting up at 3:30. What sleep I did have was quite broken up and I never seemed to be able to sleep deeply like I used to. I have taken so many different types of sleep aids over the years, behavioral sleep therapy, sleep apnea evaluations, therapy, etc, etc, etc but nothing really worked.
A pharmacist friend recommended this to me a couple of months ago and I have been using it for a month now. She recommended 3,000 mg taken an hour to a half an hour before bedtime. I thought I would start out at 2,000 mg and see how it went. 2,000 mg is more than enough for me! (I will be turning 65 this year). I take one an hour before sleep and another one a half an hour before sleep. I am now sleeping from about 10:45 till usually 6:00. I still have the usual get up to go to the bathroom times during the night but seem to go back to sleep without anxious thoughts keeping me awake. (I guess it must be calming to the nervous system). My friend told me that it certainly isn't something that can hurt me and so I don't have to worry about taking it long-term. I have done a lot of research on it since and I'm truly amazed that with all the doctors I have seen about my sleep over the years, no one recommended it to me!!! What a difference it would have made in my life if I had known earlier!!! Grrrr!! I'm hoping to save other women from the same pain. If you have magnesium bisglycinate handy, it will do the same thing as it has a lot of glycine in it (around a thousand milligrams per magnesium pill). If I take two of those it also works, so if you need magnesium also that might help.

      1. thank you so much, I truly appreciate your response

      2. thank you so much

    2. I have read online about drinking tart cherry juice, but haven't tried it. I don't even know where to purchase it. For awhile, I had been snacking on cashew nuts because they promote melatonin production - guess I just got tired of trying. Peanuts, peanut butter, bananas and spinach also have a good amount of magnesium, which is a mineral essential for calming down your body so that it can get some sleep. Magnesium supplements, for me, have been a bust, so far - they would get me to sleep, but then I'd wake up after an hour, feeling calm but WIDE awake. Melatonin supplements made me groggy and didn't keep me asleep anyway. What does help, sometimes, is sitting outside in the morning, for at least 30-45 minutes. Doing so is supposed to help reset your Circadian rhythm/cycle. At least it's free, gives you Vitamin D as well, and so far, has had no adverse side effects.

      1. It certainly can't hurt to relax in the morning sun for a bit, . I am glad you are giving it a try. I believe you can find tart cherry juice in natural food stores. I hope you come up with something that helps. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    3. Recently i find that sweet cherrys helps to sleep a little better, falling asleep faster and let's you sleep a little deeper. By mistake i just eat them every day, and these days i had like normal 6-7 h sleep otherwise i have 4-6h

      1. How awesome, . Are you aware that cherries are high in melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep? What a healthy way to get a good dose of it. I hope eating cherries before bedtime continues to improved the quality of your sleep. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

      2. Thanks for sharing. This tip about cherry is new to me.
