Am I chronic?

Hi all!

New here & struggling. For the last year I’ve had bouts of insomnia. It started with not getting to sleep until 3-4am (generally before an important event). Now it’s escalated to zero sleep before important and even minor events. It’s not the event that plays on my mind, it’s the thought of not having slept and feeling tired.

When I tell people, they tend to say “I’m sure you had more sleep than you realise” - which is very very frustrating to hear when I know I’ve been awake every second of the night.

Doctors have said to try non medicated solutions first. I’ve tried everything I can see online: breathing, white noise, audio, changing eating times, hot bath before bed, no caffeine. But when these nights come, nothing helps. At the minute it’s happening 1-2 nights a week. Last week was my ultimate low as had 3 full days & nights with about 4 hours sleep across them all. This panicked me as it was the first time it ever happened on more than one night in a row.

I’m not sure what I’m asking, but currently on my way to a full day work meeting on zero sleep and needed to speak to people who experience the same 🙁

  1. Hi here's the criteria for chronic: doctors do nothing but enrich themselves off your case for 6 months. When you are not better after 6 months, they put it in their paper that it is chronic. Chronic just means it has lasted more than 6 months and since they do nothing, most cases become chronic.

    1. Magnesium is one of my go-to things that almost always helps. Its gotta be a good quality one though. I am delighted to hear it is helping you as well. Do you also find that your quality of sleep is better? - Clair ( Team Member)

    2. I just saw this reply. I am thrilled you are sleeping better and I hope you are continuing to make progress. Know that we are here for you whenever you need us. Happy New Year! - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hi all. No, it’s not any better and getting worse. I’m on night 4 now and it’s over a weekend (when I don’t even have any work worries 🙁. Struggling.

    1. Hi . Have you tried reaching out to your doctor again? Maybe your doctor can prescribe something that can help while you get back on track. I hope you will consider CBTI. The success rates have been really high. Warmest of wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

  3. Hi, I am sorry that this is happening to you. I hope you are able to sleep now since it’s been 6 days with your last post. I never had a good sleep pattern and sometimes end up sleeping for only an hour or two until in mid September all of a sudden I couldn’t sleep at all for 12 days. Since the first night with zero hour of sleep, I started to get more and more worried that it might affect my over all healthy. I finally took doxepin prescribed by doctor and was able to sleep for 6 hours and still feeling tired the next day. I thought I would be able to sleep, and I was wrong. The third night when I took it again, it no longer work for me and got zero hours of sleep again. I finally ended up taking sleep pill called Ambien. I slept for 2-4 hours a day. I took it for 9 days, but I noticed that my health has gotten worsened. I started experiencing anxiety, nauseous and dizziness everyday. I finally made up my mind to drop it off. First night I took melatonin and didn’t get to sleep until very late in the morning. And I started wearing iwatch to detect my sleep because I found it unbelievable that I didn’t sleep at all. Surprisingly the watched showed that I sleep 1-3 hours here and there. I was over the moon. I know how you feel when people tell us that we did sleep. But it really ended up I did sleep when I thought I was awake. Since the day I found that I was able to sleep, now I have more confidence in sleep and insomnia is not as bad as before. Have you tried wearing Fitbit or iwatch to detect your sleep? It’s better not to rely on meditation as there’s always side effect. Wish you all the best!

    1. Hi Lori, thanks for replying <3

I’ve survived the meeting and now on my way home (which requires a flight, so will be a late night!). I actually have used Melatonin - I got some of the strong 10mg gummies from the US and they worked so well for a few months. Now they’ve suddenly stopped working completely and I still have a sleepless night even on 2 x 20mg melatonin, so I’m not taking them anymore. I’ve not heard or tried Benadryl though so I’m going to look it up!

Thank you. I agree that the more it happens, the more it happens as it just increases anxiety. I now feel anxious a lot during the day (even on normal days where I have slept) so think I’m just going through a stressful period in life (a breakup 6 months ago too after infidelity!).

It’s really good to hear you’ve had some success with those methods so I’m going to look into everything and try to slowly combat it. Thanks again for the support.

      1. I am so sorry to hear about the break up, . I have never understood infidelity. If you don't want to be exclusive with someone, tell them. It's cowardly to cheat. You deserve better. I hope you get a good night's sleep tonight. Gentle hugs. - Lori (Team Member)
