Insomnia

I stopped sleeping 3 years ago when my mom died. I still have insomnia. What have you tried?

  1. Hi . I am so very sorry for your loss. You must really have loved her. Unfortunately, grief is a common trigger for insomnia. Thoughts of the person you lost might keep you awake or the extremely stress from the loss of your mother might have triggered an undiagnosed autoimmune or mental health disorder that is impacting your sleep. Have you talked with your doctor about it? You really have to advocate for yourself when it comes to health care and insomnia because some doctors won't take it seriously. If you haven't done so already, now would be a good time for a super thorough physical exam that also includes checking for any nutritional deficiencies. Consider any and all new symptoms that might have developed for you over the past three years even if they seem unrelated to your insomnia. At the same time, you might want to consider seeing a therapist who specializes in grief. Here is an article from one of our advocates about her own experiences with grief and insomnia: https://insomnia.sleep-disorders.net/living/grief-loss-friend. I hope it helps you feel less alone.
