First stages sleep illness

I have trawled the internet and can find nothing on this I wonder if anyone here has experienced it. I have a handful of episodes where around an hour after falling asleep I wake up feeling really unwell. Heart isn’t overly racing but it’s an awful feeling. It’s always around the hour mark too. Happened around 10 times in 2 years. Dr seem to just brush it off but it’s a horrible feeling .

  1. Another consideration is anxiety -- I have panic disorder, and that causes a lot of adrenaline at inappropriate times. For me, I often jolt awake when it's time to get up in the morning. If you have a sleep disorder, these symptoms can be tied to your sleep/wake cycles as well. Are you able to eventually calm down and get back to sleep? -Melissa, team member

    1. yes I can get back off eventually but it’s unnerving.

  2. Hi . That sounds really unsettling. I wish your doctor had been more responsive. You deserve to have your concerns addressed. Can you make an appointment specifically to address this issue? If you are not comfortable talking further with your doctor about your symptoms, it might be a sign that you need to find another doctor. Your doctor should put you at ease, not shut you down.
Have you ever been tested for sleep apnea? That's often how I feel when I wake up from an apnea episode. Apnea is hard on the heart and it can give you a sick feeling when you awaken. It can be hard to shake off. Here is an article that explains sleep apnea: https://sleepapnea.sleep-disorders.net/basics. You can do the test at home. You won't even notice you are wearing the testing device.
It wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor for a cardiac evaluation as well just in case something is going on with your heart. Best to be safe.
I hope this helps and that you get some answers soon. Keep us up to date if you don't mind. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. I’ve mentioned it to a gastro consultant too during a consultation, as one severe episode the next day I started with really bad gastro issues. This was August and still continue. Could be IBS. But was what was happening to me in the night some sort of trigger ? I just don’t know but nobody seems to take it seriously.

    2. Sadly, we often have to be our own advocates in these situations and just keep pushing doctors to investigate. It might help to request specific evaluations and, if they are denied, to ask for an explanation. You need and deserve to be heard and treated. - Lori (Team Member)
